What I noticed on a weekend walk

I live in a wonderful part of the world it’s on the south coast of England.  whilst out for a walk around  the suburbs I couldn’t help notice how many houses had cavity wall insulation retro fitted.

During the last decade or so different governments have encouraged home owners to save energy by insulating there  houses by offering grants that greatly reduced the cost . Many companies jumped  on this as an opportunity  to make a profit sending out an army of so called energy surveyor with little training. Paid on a commission only  bases and the guy that installed the insulation paid on price work so much per meter.

Now I believe we should not waste energy, however on my walk on Sunday I couldn’t help notice the poor quality of the brickwork of many of these insulated homes. Cavity walls main purpose is to keep your home dry if let say the pointing is warn and allows rain to  be driven into the cavity. The insulation can act as a spong soaking up the rain which can pass to the inside wall.

The outside and inside leafs of your walls are held together by a wall tie which is made of metal. If left sitting in wet insulation will rust in the first you might notice cracking in the mortor in the worst case  the leafs pulling apart.

One of my mothers favourite sayings is a Sitch in time saves 9, a coat water replent aplied now could prevent more costly work in the future. After 4 years a car in the uk has to have an mot maybe it’s a practice we should adopt for our homes.

Cavity wall insulation normally has a 25 year guarantee however when you read the small print most state that properties have to be maintained.

Your home is probably the biggest asset look after your walls and they will look after you.
